Gas Insert Fireplaces

Gas insert fireplaces are a very specific type of fireplace that are designed to be installed into a wood burning fireplace. If you have an old brick chimney with a wood burning fireplace, or an old pre-fabricated wood burning fireplace with a minimum of an 8" chimney on top of it, then an insert would be an ideal solution.  Gas inserts cannot be installed in any other application. Gas insert fireplaces are usually very straight forward to install, requiring little to no construction work apart from running a gas line to the fireplace opening. Gas fireplace inserts offer a significant amount of heat for their size, typically include a blower fan, and newer models offer flush fronts with a larger viewing area. Our two main fireplace partners, Regency and Napoleon, offer a wide variety of gas insert fireplaces. Wood inserts can be straight forward to install but the actual dimension of your flue tiles and firebox opening will dictate which type and size of insert you can install. Furthermore, wood inserts installed on an upper floor will often require a chimney extension to be installed above in order for the correct amount of draft to be created. WETT Reports

A WETT Report is often required by your insurance company if you have a solid fuel burning appliance  (a wood stove for example) in your home. In order to issue a WETT report, a WETT certified inspector will need to conduct a site visit and examine the installation of your appliance and compare that with the manufacturer's requirements and current building codes. If ACE Plumbing and Heating is installing a new wood stove or insert at your house, then a WETT report is included. If you would like to schedule a WETT report, please contact us.

Fireplace Tips

Do you have a new Fireplace?

Congratulations on the purchase of your new fireplace. A fireplace helps to add ambience and warmth to your home. As with all appliances, there are some important things related to your new fireplace that you should be aware of.

All fireplaces sold in Canada go through a rigorous and individual certification process to ensure they are safe for use. Because each fireplace is certified independently, each one is a little different and the manual for the fireplace includes the definitive information for that specific fireplace; when questions arise, the fireplace manual is the most accurate source of information related to the function, installation and finishing requirements of that individual fireplace.

While each fireplace is a little different, there are some broad similarities between all fireplaces that use either Natural Gas (NG) or Liquid Propane (LP). We have put together some important information that should help you get the most out of your fireplace, and help to ensure you can enjoy your fireplace for years to come.

FINISHING AROUND THE FIREPLACE

The complete installation of a fireplace, whether doing a renovation a or new build, will require multiple trades to be involved in most circumstances. At ACE Plumbing and Heating, we handle the parts of installation related to Gas Fitting. This includes installing the fireplace and venting, connecting gas lines, relevant permits and fireplace related warranty. ACE Plumbing and Heating does not do any work related to finishing fireplaces such as adding tiles nor drywall and painting. In some many cases we can also complete some of the construction work such as framing the fireplace chase and hearth.

Each fireplace has very strict rules for how it can be safely finished. These rules include things like what types of materials can be placed above and around the fireplace (typically differing between the ability to have combustible materials (ie: timber, ship lap, drywall) or non-combustible materials (ie: steel stud, cement board, tiles etc.). There will also be strict rules for what size of mantel you can install and how close to the top of the fireplace it can be.

All of these rules are specific to each individual fireplace and the manual for each fireplace contains all of the information needed to finish the fireplace correctly, and to code. In the event the fireplace is finished in contradiction to the manual, it can void the full warranty of the fireplace and in some cases, pose a significant fire hazard that would be the responsibility of the finisher, not that of ACE Plumbing and Heating.

Your fireplace, and the area around it will get HOT.

With modern direct-vent gas fireplaces the area above the fireplace will, indeed, get very hot. The allowable temperature is 117°F above room temperature for combustible materials. Average room temperature is 70-75°F; therefore a surface temperature of around 190° can be expected. On a solid surface, these temperatures are very hot to the touch.  While it may seem that this is an excessive temperature, drywall for example, will not combust until over 450°. It is imperative that the manual for the fireplace be followed when finishing work is completed to ensure the surfaces around the fireplace remain at approved temperatures.

THE FIRST FIRE

The first time you use your fireplace, and how you do so, is very important. This process is referred to as the “First Fire”. The first fire in your fireplace is part of the paint curing process. To ensure that the paint is properly cured, it is recommended that you burn your fireplace on high for at least four (4) hours the first time you use it, with the fan on if applicable. When first operated the unit will release an odour caused by the curing of the paint and the burning off of any oils remaining from manufacturing. These odours are non-toxic. Smoke detectors in the house may go off at this time. If possible, open a few windows to ventilate the room for a couple of hours. If the full curing process is not complete, for example if you only burn it for 1 hour during the first fire, it is possible that every subsequent time you turn your fireplace on, it will release the same smell.

The glass door and inner panels may require cleaning after the First Fire. Do not attempt to clean the glass or panels while the unit is still warm, it must completely cool down first.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CLEAN THE GLASS WHILE IT IS HOT.

If you have any questions about your fireplace, whether ACE Plumbing and Heating installed it or not, please feel free to contact us anytime. If your fireplace needs to be serviced, please use the button below.
